"Nathaniel Mell" by Joseph Keough is a unique fairy-tale romp about a guy made immortal by his own impotence Felt and Fat. In the tradition of A Midsummer's Night Dream, Keough draws heavily from mythology and historical traditions of"The Necromancer". The story is told in first person from Nathaniel, who is called upon by his evil stepmother to bring her brother's sword. When the brothers fight, Nathaniel is badly wounded, but his bravery frees up time to push the sword to his brother's skull. He then falls sick, which prompts his stepmother to carry him to the grounds of a church dedicated to burial. Her words to calm him, and he recovers.

These days, Nathaniel is working hard to earn a living for his stepmother and his young daughter, Deirdre. However, when the girl becomes dropped in her way to school one day, Nathaniel must stand guard while she's being searched. Then he overhears a conversation between an unseen stranger and a merchant in a tavern and is convinced that this guy is in league with the Necromancer. Before long, Nathaniel becomes the Necromancer's right hand man.

What begins as a simple case of mistaken identity quickly grows sinister when the Necromancer starts using odd powers within Nathaniel's body and mind. His own faith in his own abilities develops, and before long he has changed into a cold demeanor and reclusive demeanor. His only friend in the group is his niece, Charmaine.

When Deirdre is captured by the Necromancer, Nathaniel takes charge of her rescue. However, things do not go quite as planned. As they flee through the woods, the Necromancer catches up with them, but is unable to hurt them straight. Rather, he's them lure a massive herd of deer to a destroyed village, in which a highly effective fire has been waiting. With the support of Charmaine and Nathaniel, the villagers are saved.

As the story unfolds, we understand that Nathaniel's father is rich and powerful, and can be involved in many important affairs. It seems he wields power , and that everyone knows it. This includes the people who work for him. His suspicions are confirmed when one of his assistants goes missing. Later, while investigating, his suspicions are confirmed when the Necromancer murders the helper and his spouse.

The Necromancer then uses his newfound power to turn Nathaniel to an undead menace. With the support of a few new folks, such as a priest, Nathaniel has to fight his way through a dark woods, fighting not just the Necromancer but the guys who want to kill him. Only by his own strength and the determination of those near him could Nathaniel succeed against the wicked magician - and save the world Felt+Fat.
